Native to South Pacific and Indian oceans, this popular marine aquarium fish was released off Florida in the mid 1980’s. Since then, it has expanded its range, which now extends north to New York. An apex predator with venomous spines, the species is known to prey on several snapper, grouper, and other reef species. Consequently, it is considered a serious threat to native fish inhabiting offshore reefs.
