Native to Russia, China, and Korea, this freshwater invasive has been introduced in the U.S. as a food fish and a popular sportfish. An apex predator that eats several aquatic species, it can grow to 33” and reproduce after one year. Sometimes referred to as the “Frankenfish,” this fish can breathe out of water and may move across land. It is often confused with the native Bowfin (mudfish) but is easily distinguishable by its large anal fin extending over half its body length.
