In the first of its kind program in the country, the All Terrain Georgia Program provides a great opportunity for mobility-impaired individuals to explore the outdoors through the use of the Action Track Wheelchair.
This wheelchair will make its debut on Nov. 15, 2021 at the Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center. This program is made possible thanks to an initiative between the Aimee Copeland Foundation and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
“The goal of the program is to enable people with mobility impairments the ability to enjoy the nurturing and healing qualities of the vast natural resources our state has to offer,” said Kim Morris-Zarneke, Program Manager at the Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center. “Everyone deserves a chance to live and play in this community and we are excited to be a location that will provide that chance.”
Through the All Terrain Georgia Program, the Aimee Copeland Foundation and Georgia DNR will make Action Track Wheelchairs available to the public. These chairs are not an ATV. Instead, they are all electric, leaving no carbon footprint, and given that they are approximately the same weight as an electric wheelchair, they will not disturb the trails and paths.
“This opportunity truly allows all members of the public to get outside and explore the numerous recreational opportunities DNR has available,” said Morris-Zarneke.
The Action Track Wheelchair will immediately be put to use at the Adaptive Hunting Retreat at the Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center scheduled to take place Nov. 15-16. This is a two-day event for ten hunters with mobility challenges. The Retreat will include an overview of the Action Track Chair and its operation, safety briefing, range time, deer biology/habitat and behavior, and a deer hunt overview. Participants and their support person will then be accompanied by a Georgia DNR staff guide on their hunt who will share their knowledge and experience with the participant.
