About John Pafford

The event honors longtime CRD marine biologist John Pafford, whose 34-year career helped expand coastal access and fishing opportunities in Georgia.

A legacy of access, mentorship, and coastal stewardship

Over a remarkable 34-year career, the late CRD marine biologist John Pafford (May 22, 1947 - March 13, 2022) left an enduring legacy along Georgia’s coast. A Glynn County native and veteran of the U.S. Army, John’s work with CRD ranged from publishing a groundbreaking report on marine finfish to designing public fishing piers, and launching this activity, the annual kids fishing event. Passionate about coastal access for all, he taught himself to draft engineering plans and helped secure federal funding to improve facilities. Whether building lab equipment or mentoring staff, John led with humility, humor, and heart. He championed teamwork and work-life balance long before those were buzzwords, always encouraging learning through mistakes. From the Earth Day Nature Trail to enhanced public boat ramps, his quiet influence is felt across the coast. He was the kind of leader who got his hands dirty, showed up early, and put people first. In recognition of his lifelong dedication, CRD's annual Kids Fishing Event is dedicated to John—an inspiring scientist, builder, mentor, and friend whose work continues to benefit generations.
