Location: The Landings, Skidaway Island
These cameras usually follow ospreys nesting beside the Palmetto golf course at The Landings, a community on Skidaway Island near Savannah. Great horned owls have also used the nest.
Depending on the species, nesting activity typically occurs from winter through spring. Throughout the year other animals are often seen in and around the nest tree.
2023: Neither ospreys nor great horned nested at the site.
2022: Although ospreys have nested here or in an adjacent tree for years, great horned owls used the nest in winter 2022, as they last did in 2016. The owls laid one egg Jan. 17. The owlet that hatched fledged in April. Ospreys visited the nest often later that month although it was too late in the season for them to start a family.
2021: An osprey pair had three eggs, with one each laid March 5, 8 and 11. The first chick hatched April 13 and the second on April 16. The third egg did not hatch. Both chicks survived. The elder sibling took its first flight June 12; the younger fledged June 16.
2020: In fall 2019, cam operators and volunteers built a nest in an adjacent because the old nest tree was dead and had to be cut down. Ospreys took to the new nest and the female laid four eggs in March 2020. One egg was buried in the nest and rejected. The remaining eggs hatched in mid- to late April. The youngest chick died a few days after hatching. The others fledged on June 16.
2019: Ospreys laid three eggs in March. All hatched and the young fledged in June.
The original nest was built by bald eagles. Great horned owls nested there in 2015 and 2016, raising two owlets each year. Ospreys used the site from 2017-2021.
