TIP was initiated in Georgia in 1983. It was organized when a Safari Club International officer from Georgia saw this type of program beginning to have a positive effect in other states and began working with the Georgia DNR Law Enforcement Division to develop a similar program here. The all-volunteer board is made up of members representing lead Georgia conservation organizations and interested individuals with considerable experience in preserving Georgia wildlife.
TIP is a non-profit organization and depends on the generosity of individuals and conservation organizations for funding. The Georgia Wildlife Federation (GWF) reimburses TIP for rewards paid on deer violations; the Georgia Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation reimburses TIP for rewards paid on turkey violations, as well as provides a matching reward to turkey violation claimants; the Georgia Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America reimburses TIP for rewards paid on fish violations; and Georgia Chapters of Waterfowl USA, reimburses TIP for waterfowl violations. A new member of TIP is the Quality Deer Management Association of Georgia. Other long-time supporters are the Georgia Chapter of the Safari Club International, Georgia Outdoors News Magazine (GON), and Hillsman Deer Cooler, which sponsors the Georgia Big Buck Contest. TIP has also received financial support from interested citizens over the years. In fact, several Georgians have used the network to report violators and then donated their reward back to the program.
Each year TIP distributes at no cost 10,000 orange and white bumper stickers with the "hotline" number to sportsmen/women at the GWF Buckarama and Turkeyrama. They are also given to attendees of DNR's hunter education courses and other forums, such as landowner or land-leasing hunting club meetings, programs in the public schools and civic groups, etc.
The TIP reward program is becoming increasingly successful and expensive. Rewards are typically $100 and are paid promptly after an arrest is made.
