The information provided below is intended to provide a step-by-step guide for employees and managers regarding performance planning and evaluation.

The planning phase for the 2018-2019 Performance Management is almost here. One issue that has emerged during the last performance year is that Section 2 (Individual Goals) of many performance plans is not adequate.  Managers may clone performance plans this year but they should review the plan to ensure that the goals are adequate. Section 2 of the performance plan should have the following characteristics:

  • There should be 3-5 individual goals in each performance plan.
  • Goals should not be Competencies such as Communication, Customer Services, etc. Unfortunately, many plans incorrectly list competencies in this section. Competencies appearing in this section are left over from cloning past plans.
  • The goals should be S.M.A.R.T. goals that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time Bound.

Writing S.M.A.R.T. goals will help the manager more accurately communicate employee goals and will allow the employee to more easily understand and achieve the goals.
