Youth Christmas Bird Count

Traditional Christmas Bird Counts (CBC) feature 8-hour days and lots of driving. This Youth CBC is specifically for kids. There is no driving, and the count lasts just 2.5 hours. Teams of kids ages 8-16 will be led by experienced birders as they search the fields and forests of the Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center for birds. After lunch, kids can present their findings and we will have a birds of prey presentation.

Kids' Fishing Events

Fishing together with your child and family can build some powerful memories, so make this a summer to remember!  Don’t know how to fish?  No problem.  There are plenty of on-site volunteers providing assistance at the many statewide kids fishing events scheduled this spring and summer. These events take place in locations where kids are likely to catch fish and are surrounded by people with like-minded interests, which help reinforce the positive experience.

Out My Backdoor: Turning the Jack-O’-Lantern into Wildlife Treats

By Terry W. Johnson

Have you have noticed that pumpkins mean different things to different people? For a child, pumpkins represent jack-o’-lanterns and Halloween. Homeowners, on the other hand, consider bright orange pumpkins to be ideal fall yard decorations. To those among us who enjoy fine food, pumpkins conjure up thoughts of pumpkin pie, stew, soup and roast pumpkin, and other delicacies. Unfortunately, few think of pumpkins as a source of food for wildlife.

State Fish Art Contest

Got a young artist residing in your home? Be sure to encourage them to enter the annual Wildlife Forever State-Fish Art contest. This contest is open to kids in Grades K-12, but the deadline for entries is March 31st – and you have to enter to win!

Students across the United States and internationally have the opportunity to win prizes and recognition while learning about state-fish species, behaviors, aquatic habitats, and conservation.  Using art, the State-Fish Art Contest ignites children’s imagination while teaching them about fish and fishing.
