Family Day at the Range

Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center and the Hunter Development Program offer a variety of firearm training courses to provide participants the opportunity to learn firearm safety and proper shooting technique. Introduction and Beyond the Basics training days are provided, so a novice or beginner can learn the fundamentals of the various shooting disciplines.

To register, call 770-784-3059. Registration for these courses closes the Monday (6 days) before the training course. A liability/waiver form, as well as photo release form must be completed before attending one of these courses. Fill out a liability/waiver form and photo release form and email to David Dockery at david.dockery@dnr.ga.gov.

Please note that a nominal fee is charged per participant, and participants are responsible for bringing their own lunch.

Introduction Training Courses:

The Family Day at the Range series offers introduction training courses for individuals that wish to learn basic firearm safety and have the opportunity to shoot a variety of firearms.

Introduction to Rifle: Learn and practice safe shooting techniques for rifle. These classes focus on firearm safety, hunter education and give participants an opportunity to shoot. All classes begin in the Visitor Center with a firearm orientation before participants go to the range. Training course begins at 10 a.m. and will end at 3 p.m.

Introduction to Handgun: Learn and practice safe shooting techniques for handgun. This course is for individuals age 10 and up. These classes focus on firearm safety, hunter education and give participants an opportunity to shoot. All classes begin in the Visitor Center with a firearm orientation before participants go to the range. Training course begins at 10 a.m. and will end at 3 p.m.

Introduction to Shotgun: Learn and practice safe shooting techniques for shotgun. This course is for individuals age 12 and up. Participants will be able to shoot varies gauges. Participants will learn firearm safety, proper shooting technique, hunter education and have the opportunity to shoot clay targets. All classes begin in the Visitor Center for a firearm orientation before participants go to the range. Training course begins at 10 a.m. and will end at 3 p.m.

Introduction to Muzzleloading: Learn and practice safe shooting techniques for muzzleloading. This course is for individuals age 10 and up. Participants will learn firearm safety, hunter education and have the opportunity to shoot. All classes begin in the Visitor Center for a firearm orientation before participants go to the range. Training course begins at 10 a.m. and will end at 3 p.m.

Policies

  • A nonrefundable $3.00 registration fee per session is required for each participant.
  • Participants must follow DNR Policies as well as the direction and instructions from the firearm instructors.
  • The Hunter Development Program provides all firearms, ammunition and targets.  
  • Please arrive at the Visitor Center for check-in and safety orientation.
  • To allow as many individuals in the community to participant in Family Day at the Range sessions, we permit students to attend all sessions but students can only take the same session once during a calendar year.
